Charges have been laid against five local youth in connection to a rash of break and enters to local schools over the past five weeks.

North Battleford RCMP say five youth between ages 12 to 15 have been charged with break, enter and theft as well as possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Two of the youth were scheduled to appear in provincial court Friday morning. The other three were to appear in court Aug. 29.

The investigation continues and police said they expect more charges to be laid.

A number of other individuals under the age of 12 were also caught, and police say they have been dealt with through the ongoing investigations and with the assistance of partner agencies in the community.

The RCMP had been conducting what they describe as a vigorous investigation into the break-ins, with new incidents reported as recently as this past week.

Those impacted say the damage has been widespread and across numerous locations, with some schools said to have been broken into multiple times.

Police say the severity of damage and theft has ranged from a broken window to vandalized classrooms as well as the theft of a computer, money, food items and electronic equipment.

The issue was raised at North Battleford city council June 24 during the presentation of RCMP S/Sgt. Phil Wilson's monthly crime report. Mayor Ian Hamilton said the rash of school break-ins was of great concern to the community.
