2016 Civic Election

City Hall in North Battleford is starting to see some interest expressed by prospective candidates for council.

The first candidate to confirm intention to run again for council is Don Buglas.

He has officially filed his papers at City Hall to run for another term as city councillor.

If re-elected, it would be Buglas’s fifth term on council. No other candidates had filed nomination papers as of early Monday afternoon.

More candidates are expected to come forward in both the mayor’s and council races in the coming days.

The municipal election received a major jolt earlier in the day on word that Mayor Ian Hamilton had decided not to run for re-election to that position.

Hamilton had been widely expected to seek another term and had in fact already announced plans to run again.

However, Hamilton made it known in a statement Monday he would not be filing nomination papers.

There was still more than a week left before the filing deadline for the six available council positions as well as the mayor’s chair. The nomination deadline is Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
