Just one year into the program, Battlefords Union Hospital's obstetrical team is being honoured with the national recognition award for achievement in implementing the MOREOB patient safety program.

MOREOB stands for Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently.

The BUH obstetrical team of 35 physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing leaders has received the award for its outstanding performance in the application of knowledge, communication and teamwork to make patient safety the priority and the responsibility of everyone on the birthing unit, according to a Prairie North Health Region press release.

The award was formally presented to the team Friday as team members began their second year of MOREOB training focusing on the Working Together module of the program.

"We are thrilled and excited to receive this recognition award," said Pamela Plummer, nurse manager of the Women's Health and Birthing (obstetrical) Unit. "Implementing the program has helped to enhance patient safety and the patient experience for our moms and newborns by helping the entire obstetrical team provide the most consistent, up-to-date care based on best practice," Plummer added.

"We are very proud to have been able to provide this service to the 602 moms and their babies born on the unit in the past year."

Plummer added that "implementation of the MOREOB program is a significant step for us toward achieving the unit's mission of 'working together to provide a consistent and safe approach to obstetrical care."

Shelly Horsman, BUH director of Acute Care, stated, "We commend all those who have participated in the program to date at BUH and strongly encourage them to continue with their learning to enhance patient care and safety for all moms and babies."

To qualify for the recognition award, greater than 80 per cent of the team must have participated in the patient safety activities, according to PNHR. A functioning core team must be in place and the team members must have fulfilled at least three of the four activities that include having held regular core team meetings, shared the workload fairly and equitably among team members; achieved physician engagement, and engaged senior leadership in the program.

The members of BUH's Obstetrical Team achieved a combined level of 97 per cent participation in patient safety activities and met the requirements of a functioning core team, the release states.
