CARROT RIVER — Carrot River residents are being warned by the town about a danger to letting their pets outdoors, after a lynx was spotted in the area.

The Town of Carrot River said this comes at a time they have been receiving reports about cats going missing.

“A few different people have trail cams out in their yards and one person had posted a picture of a lynx being in their yard,” said Kevin Trew, Carrot River’s administrator.

“We have heard from a few different people about cats that have gone missing. There has been some speculation about whether they were lunch for somebody.”

While lynx will not typically harm humans, they may present a danger to cats which can be seen as a food source for the much larger feline.

“We know lynx definitely do like to take down small animals, that’s their food of choice,” Trew said.

“While they’re not common, there are certainly lynx in and around Carrot River, and we certainly do have forests not very far from the town— the provincial forest is very close here. It’s certainly not uncommon that there are wild animals in town or on the edge of town.”
