CCMA volunteer rubs shoulders with stars

Azure McGonigle is no stranger to volunteer work.

She has volunteered with the Unity Community Resource Centre and the Unity United Church. When she heard on CBC Saskatchewan News that the Canadian Country Music Association Awards were coming to Saskatoon and volunteers were needed to help put the show on, she jumped at the chance.

They were looking for people who had previous volunteer experience and McGonigle fit the bill, so she put in an online application. All of the volunteer positions open were available to Saskatchewan residents only. Azure was one of the applicants chosen out of the hundreds who applied.

"CBC called me two and half weeks before the show, asking me to be there on Thursday evening as a wrangler," McGonigle said.

"I took on this role outside of Unity, because I was shocked they were calling someone from a smaller community."

She says she was proud to be part of a large national event hosted in Saskatchewan, where she grew up.

"The biggest personal benefit for me was to meet all the country artists I hear on the radio. I was quite surprised how most of the artists and groups are very personal and enjoyed talking to fans "

McGonigle says her duties as a volunteer were challenging, but she would jump at another chance like this "in a hear beat."
