Free Green Ash tree seedlings are available for pick-up at SaskPower’s customer services offices during Environment Week (June 5-11, 2016), while supplies last.

The seedlings are courtesy of SaskPower’s Shand Greenhouse, which uses some of the waste heat from Shand Power Station near Estevan to grow tree and shrub seedlings, which are then planted across the province by non-profit organizations. For more than 20 years, SaskPower has also made seedlings available to customers during Environment Week.

“Our greenhouse programs support SaskPower’s commitment to responsible stewardship, which guides our efforts to protect Saskatchewan’s air, land and water as we generate and deliver electricity,” said SaskPower president and CEO Mike Marsh.

Since 1992, the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse has cultivated more than 10 million shrubs and trees. That’s enough to naturally capture about 830,000 tonnes of carbon from our environment. The greenhouse also helps to educate the next generation of environmental stewards with its Trees & Kids Program.

This year, in addition to conservation and energy efficiency, Trees & Kids will highlight low emissions generation options in support of SaskPower’s goal of 50 per cent renewable generation capacity by 2030. About 50 students in the Estevan area will take a hands-on approach to learning about wind and solar power by creating their own mini-wind turbines and baking s’mores in mini solar ovens.

“Whether it’s planting trees, finding ways to use electricity more efficiently or learning about renewable power sources, protecting the environment is all about making responsible choices,” Marsh added.

“Environment Week gives us an opportunity to remind ourselves of that and to share that message with our customers.”

Free Green Ash seedlings are available at SaskPower customer service offices in North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon and Yorkton while supplies last.
