Agriculture is the backbone of Saskatchewan and it is safe to say the Rural Municipality of North Battleford has survived 100 years due in large part to a consistent agricultural tradition.

Saturday, R.M. of North Battleford residents, councillors and dignitaries joined together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RM.

The message repeated by those who spoke at the banquet was of the strong pioneering spirit that has helped the community become what it is today and the optimism for the future holds.

"We all need to thank our, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents," said David Marit, president of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities. "It took a lot of guts and determination to raise a family in Saskatchewan."

Those people who moved to the area around the Battlefords laid a foundation for what now holds over 700 residents and some of the areas hidden gems, as far as unique and natural landscape. The RM of North Battleford is home to the Blue Mountain Outdoor Adventure Centre and the Whitehill Lakes, but added to the list just two years ago was the Northland Power Energy Centre.

Boris Balan spoke on behalf of the new operation located in the RM. He explained the process and the generosity of the past and current council, as both sides worked to create a partnership, which will see Northland Power operating for 20 years following the construction of the plant.

"One of the biggest factors when developing a project like this," said Bahan, "is you need to find a community that wants you or at least puts up with you."

The RM has done just that from the beginning of this project and because of the great leadership, the economic life is growing in the municipality.

Reeve Jim Rogers said he was glad everyone could come together and commemorate the milestone.

"While we celebrate the past, let's celebrate out future," said Rogers.

Along with balloons and cake, there was a supper and entertainment provided by Kenny Shaw, door prizes and speakers from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
