HUMBOLDT — The City of Humboldt is asking residents to ensure their sump pumps are working properly, with their discharge directed outside, not into the sanitary sewer system.
Rob Muench, Humboldt's mayor, declared a local state of emergency at June 14 at 5:15 p.m. due to the high amount of rainfall that fell within a short period of time.
Part of the reason for the declaration is the city fears storm water will overwhelm the sanitary sewer system, which is why they are asking residents to check their sump pumps.
Earlier, the mayor asked motorists to not drive down streets in Northwest Humboldt, including Centennial Way, Barnes Crescent, Thompson Drive, Fifth Avenue near 11th Street, and 17th Street north and south of Highway 5 to avoid further property damage.
