The City of North Battleford has issued a news release where it is “strongly encouraging” people to stay away from the North Saskatchewan River until the ice breakup is complete.

They state sloughs, dugouts and other bodies of water with ice should be avoided, as the ice is thin and unsafe. Ice jams are also possible and may cause flooding conditions in low lying areas; riverbanks are also a serious risk to people and pets on them.

North Battleford Fire Department will continue to monitor the river for the following conditions: river current and flow, ice conditions and breakup, ice jams, and possible flooding. The city also advises that if you witness an ice-related emergency, call 911 immediately.
