With the calendar flipping to September it was time once again to start thinking about options for fall programming as the City of Humboldt hosted their fall city-wide registration night on Sept. 1.
In total there were 30 tables set up in the Humboldt Curling Club, with many different groups in attendance including sports organizations, education options for all ages, boy scouts and girls guides, churches, music studios, 4H, dance clubs, Humboldt Kinettes Baby Sitting Course, Humboldt & District Museum and Gallery, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Humboldt Community Gathering Place, Toastmasters, and Curves.
Humboldt Recreation Program Coordinator, Michelle Stevenson, says hosting the city wide registration nights are great because they provide children, and adults with an opportunity to learn what programs are available.
“The groups get to share what they do, what they’re up to and people might get to find an activity they didn’t know was an option.”
As part of the fall city wide registration there was also a volunteer appreciation barbecue to recognize the tremendous work of the volunteers throughout the city.
“They don’t get the recognition quite often and they don’t even realize how much time and effort they’re putting in so it’s just nice to say thanks and give them a little gift,” says Stevenson.
The volunteer appreciation barbecue used to be held as a separate event, says Stevenson, but in recent years they combined it with the city-wide registration to reach a greater number of volunteers, which Stevenson says seemed to work.
“We had enough food for around 300 people and I don’t think they’re packing up very much so it gets a little bigger and better every year.”
With city wide moving from Jubilee Hall to the Curling Club and some of the groups moving to more online registrations, Stevenson says it is a little harder to tell what the overall turnout was like but says it seemed to be pretty good.
“It was steady, people came and went all night so I would say I’m happy with the turnout. It’s just a little harder to tell in this space.”
