Humboldt Collegiate Institute celebrated their Awards Day on Jun. 7.
Teacher and Award Committee Chairperson, Carol Meachem, says that some areas are completely academic in nature while others take in other critical information such as volunteerism, extra curriculars, and character.
For grade 12 students, their intentions for after high school also play a role in eligibility for some of the awards.
The Collegiate striving for the pursuit of excellence, says Meachem in reference to the school motto.
“Academic excellence is important especially for many of our students. As a collegiate we do prepare students to go on to post-secondary...as well as the workforce.”
Recognizing an academic tradition of historically successful graduates, including two Rhodes Scholars, is also very important, says Meachem.
“If you’re an academically talented and gifted student, you don’t get the cheers and the medals and things that you would at an athletic competition. It’s very different.”
As well as academics, Meachem says they also award student’s character, artistic ability, and other variety of qualities.
“We’re trying to award the whole person, not just the athlete only.”
