With major construction at Nipawin’s swimming pool, a committee is re-examining the historic Irene Manley name.
According to minutes from the Recreation and Parks Board, a committee has agreed the pool should be renamed, with Irene Manley being recognized in some manner, like a plaque.
Rennie Harper, Nipawin’s mayor, emphasized that no decision has been made.
“That has not come yet for council other than the letter of concern that we got last night for information,” she said a day after the April 10 council meeting.
The letter asked the Recreation and Parks Board to consider the history of the pool and remember why it was named after Manley, who made contributions to the pool and the speed swimming club.
Council would have to make the final decision if there were to be a name change.
“We do recognize that there is some concern out there,” Harper said. “We do know that.”
