MELFORT — A new community ambassador program aims to connect Melfort residents with activities to do as a summer with COVID-19 restrictions arrives.
Brent Lutz, Melfort’s communication relations director, said people might need a little bit of help this summer in finding activities that are healthy while still complying with COVID-19 restrictions.
Melfort has an abundance of high-quality recreation facilities, he said. While some of them have started re-opening following virus restrictions, recreation options are still limited, Lutz said.
The Play Melfort Community Ambassador Program will see recreational opportunities across the city be made safely available for all ages with a focus on getting children and families active during the summer, Lutz said.
While the city normally hires summer students to work through the Canada Summer Works program, they were still able to hire a vibrant team of ambassadors, he said.
“We'll have them circulating throughout the community on bicycles. During the next eight weeks. They will be in colourful uniforms and so they're highly visible and we're hoping that they will be able to encourage respect of the current health guidelines as we work to reopen our facilities.”
All activities are ones that can be enjoyed while social distancing, Lutz said, including scavenger hunts, yoga, lawn tours, and sidewalk art. The program will circulate around the city instead of being based at a single location, he said. Ambassadors have also created a unique service for families with home play kits that can be borrowed from the city. Kits include toys and games to play in their backyards. This way families can enjoy different activities while they wait for facilities to open.
