The cooler weather and rain helped volunteer firefighters douse grass fires set at several locations on Sweetgrass First Nation.

There were six separate fires set Thursday night, according to S/Sgt. Jason Teniuk of the Battlefords RCMP. Residents at two homes were evacuated but they have since returned, he said.

Battlefords RCMP and the Sweetgrass volunteer fire department responded, spending hours fighting the grass fires.

“A lot of time and resources went into it,” said S/Sgt. Tenuik in a phone interview Friday.

“There’s nothing burning right now,” he added. “It was an unfortunate situation but there was no property damage and no one was injured.”

S/Sgt. Teniuk said witnesses saw an ATV in the area where the fires were set.

Police are still asking anyone with any information about the fires to please contact the Battlefords RCMP Detachment at 306-446-1720 or Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting a tip online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com
