Here is a look at some of the items to come up at council at the Monday, July 15 meeting.
BYLAWS
A couple of bylaws were passed unanimously at Monday night’s meeting. One was an amendment to the vacant commercial levy bylaw, which passed in three readings. The other was a bylaw to amend the waterworks system bylaw and sewerage system bylaw.
The latter bylaw amendments change water charges for underground infrastructure from $12.37 down to $10.87 on the 5/8th-to-one-inch residential meter size, and sewerage system charges for underground infrastructure portions from $17.09 to $13.30 on the 5/8th-to-one inch residential meter size.
Tied to that bylaw was a resolution where administration was authorized to adjust utility accounts by rebating for the amount charged for undergrounds infrastructure flat rate for residential meter size 5/8th-to-one-inch to reflect the reduction in rates. That also passed unanimously.
The changes address concerns raised by residents about increases to their bills as a result of some recent changes that equalized meter rates between commercial and residential customers.
BUILDING PERMITS WAY DOWN
Building permits values are way down for the year, according to the latest permit numbers presented. Through the month of June, 47 permits have been issued for $1,838,700, compared to 58 for $14,597,350 for the same period last year. In June, six permits were issued for $636,000 compared to 11 for $953,500.
CURBSIDE GIVEAWAY
The free curbside giveaway program, where residents could place reusable items on the curb for other residents to be able to pick up, is coming back. Council has passed a resolution to hold them twice a year, once in the spring and one in the fall.
The last one was held in June 2018 and was well received by local residents items. The city has promoted these events as a way to divert items from the landfill.
Council is currently on its one-meeting-per-month summer schedule. The next meeting is set for Aug. 19.
