EAST CENTRAL — With the passing of the council nomination deadline, former councillors and new council candidates have made their intentions known.

Melfort

So far in Melfort, two former members of the city council are now up for the mayor’s seat as councillor Glenn George and current mayor Rick Lang vie for the position.

Nine people are vying for council seats so far, including five incumbents, Darryl Benson, Tim Hoenmans, Trent Mitchell, April Phillips and Doug Terry, and five potential newcomers to the council, Tara Muntain, Cam Lee, Wade Rogers, Brian Enge and Don Signori.

Tisdale

Tisdale council will be looking fairly new with Al Jellicoe going uncontested in Tisdale for the mayor’s chair and two incumbent councillors back on the ballot to make a run for their former seats, Mike Hill and Brendon Samida. New names on the ballot for this election include Marilyn Baker, Adam Lewis, Kurt Johnson, Howard Saelhof, Evan Sisson and Amanda Reynolds.

Nipawin

Nipawin will already see an interesting run at the mayor chair with Rennie Harper on the ballot again, with Marlon Zacharias and Brian Starkell also taking a run at the mayoral position. All six former councillors will be going for another term with Sheldon Chornawka, Geoff Stewart, Joyce Watts, Kerry Skowronski, and Gene Rusk back on the ballot. New names on the election ballot will include John Dempster, Bruce Pihowich, Stacey Vik and Sheila Seiferling.

Hudson Bay

There will not be a 2020 election in the Town of Hudson Bay with the mayor and council position all going uncontested. Glenn McCaffery will be returning as mayor  in the coming term and five councillors will also return to their council seats. One newcomer, Kelly Stonehouse, will join the table to fill the vacant council seat following the death of long-serving councillor and former mayor, Elvira Rumak.

Deadline for municipal election nomination papers was Oct. 7 at 4 P.M. with candidates given 24 hours to withdraw their names from the race. Residents will be casting their ballots for mayor and council on Nov. 9.

Stay tuned for profiles on all the candidates.
