NIPAWIN — Council is in support of a program that would divert textiles from the landfill.

Diabetes Canada runs a program where it provides bins where residents can dispose of their textiles. They said an estimated 85 per cent of clothing ends up in the landfill.

“Council did agree to authorize a bin to be placed in town,” said Barry Elliott, the town's administrator, while talking about the July 9 council meeting. “The area we were talking about was the area where the farmers’ market sets up during the summer months, near the arena.”

That area is easily accessible, kept clear of snow and isn’t in the way. Elliott said the town is waiting on Diabetes Canada to act.

“It’s in their court to get the bin to us,” he said. “We’ve got a location ready for them whenever its gets here.”

Dollar confusion

The town had to pass a new bylaw to guarantee a loan for the Boreal Area Regional Waste Authority, thanks to a $96.49 difference.

Originally, the Diamond North Credit Union told the town the amount would be $1,100,794.73, but due to a delay in passing the bylaw, the amount is actually $1,100,698.24.

At first, the provincial finance ministry told the town to change the number in the bylaw, but then changed its mind and told them to pass a new bylaw.

The Recorder asked Elliott if the cost of passing a new bylaw was more than $96.49.

“There was certainly some staff time writing out the new resolution and all of us talking about it but no, there’s was no real time or money put into it.”
