NIPAWIN — When COVID-19 hit Saskatchewan residents with job losses and economic challenges, many community governments stepped up to offer assistance to these residents.

The Town of Nipawin was no exception as they deferred their water bills for all residents and would not disconnect water for non-payment.

As of an announcement on Aug. 24, residents will have to once again begin paying their water bills.

COVID-19 will continue to be a reality for the foreseeable future, said Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s administrator, but with the province opening back up, it was time for the council to make a decision. More than 600 town utility accounts are overdrawn, Elliott said, and the provincial and federal governments do have supports in place for people in need. Council is aware of the challenges people may still be having with unemployment and paying their bills.

“If anyone needs deferral beyond the end of September, arrangements can be made in specific circumstances.”

Implementing the deferral program again if it is needed is not completely out of the question at this time, Elliott said. During these unpredictable times, Elliott said he would never say never.
