There were fireworks inside, but also some action outside the Uniplex on May 4.
Just as the opening ceremonies for the RBC Cup Canadian Junior A Hockey League championship tournament were winding down, a car skated off the road right outside the building.
It was at about 8:05 p.m. on May 4 that the driver of a Volkswagen car, travelling westbound on 5th Ave., lost control of the vehicle and left the road just west of the Humboldt Skateboard Park on the Uniplex grounds.
The car entered the north ditch, hit an approach, then came to rest on the other side of the approach, near some standing water, reported Const. Trevor Scott of the Humboldt RCMP.
A bystander who witnessed the crash called emergency crews, who were right at hand, as they were just leaving the Uniplex.
There were two occupants in the vehicle -- a male driver and a female passenger. Neither was injured in the crash.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash. The driver has been charged with impaired driving.
