On June 6, women of varying levels of experience made merry and played golf out on Humboldt’s Golf Course during the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Diva for a Day golf tournament. The beautiful weather would have made the day a success had it not been for the sudden rainstorm midway through.
The event was kicked off with mimosas, coffee, danishes, and fruit served by men who were then to be auctioned off as caddies for charity. There were 14 registered teams of four women each, three of which were sponsored by their companies. Two teams in particular came dressed to the nines with boas and fancy hats to compete for the Best Dressed prize.
“My favourite part was the very beginning when we sat down at our table and the caddies were waiting on us,” said Lois Indzeoski, one of the members of the team that was runner-up for Best Dressed. “In spite of the fact that we got rained and hailed out and didn’t get to finish our rounds, it didn’t feel like we were shortchanged.”
The male caddies included fire chief Mike Kwasnica, deputy fire chief Darrell Wickenhauser, Boston Pizza general manager Evan Nyhus, and Mike Herperger and Cam Koski from the golf course.
“The caddies weren’t really sure what to expect, so we appreciated the fact that they stepped up and we want to say a personal thank you to them,” said Stacey Poss, marketing and recruitment coordinator for BBBS Humboldt and area. “I think that was the biggest challenge. They’d sign up and then something would come up; they were coming and going.”
Since it was their first year and a lot of work, BBBS was assisted in the organization by the Kinettes and other individuals who volunteered to help.
Aside from the 18 holes the women could have played, there were also vendors set up at various holes showing their wares or handing out treats. At one hole, a team could do some stretching with a yoga instructor. At another, a lady was giving out cheesecake and pina colada samples.
“Everybody said they really liked the caddies and had a great time with them,” said Poss. “They also really enjoyed the vendor piece. We’ll probably have more vendors next year because now we know what it’s about.”
Poss actually got this diva golfing idea from BBBS in Prince Albert, who hosted their sixth event this year. It was the first time they tried putting something like that together here in Humboldt, so not many people knew what to expect. Nevertheless, despite that, BBBS still managed to raise roughly $2,500 after expenses.
“It’s not buckets of money this year, but we knew that going ahead. We were establishing the event this year, but with so much going on there wasn’t huge sponsorship because there were a lot of other worthy causes,” said Poss. “It was a good start though, so we’re very happy with that.”
