The Dekker Centre's Celebrate the Arts returns for the fourth year Friday, April 8.
With a different theme each year, the annual event is a fundraiser for the facility.
"Proceeds of the evening support the operating and programming expenses of the Dekker Centre and make it possible for local performing arts groups to use the Dekker Centre at affordable rates," says Karen Ulmer, board chair.
This year's theme is magic, with the evening titled Celebrate the Arts … of Illusion.
Ulmer says to expect a show-stopping performance by Wes Barker, illusionist and comedian.
Barker, who describes himself as a stunt magician, has appeared on America's Got Talent, MTV and the Comedy Network and has even fooled Las Vegas magicians Penn and Teller on their TV show Fool Us. With 28 million views on Youtube, Vancouver-based Barker is one of the most popular entertainers in his genre.
Barker will appear on the Gordon Tootoosis Memorial Stage at 8 p.m., however two hours of entertainment will precede the magic show, starting at 6 p.m. in the Dekker Centre atrium. There will be multiple musical performances, roving puppeteers and the work of local visual artists.
Ulmer says, "Enjoy the delicious food supplied by our inspired local caterers, sample the Magical Mystery Drink at our refreshment stations or hear your 'future' from the Great Swami (truthfulness not guaranteed). Try painting your own souvenir of the evening, or take home a picture from our enchanted-to-make-you-look-good photo booth."
Following Wes Barker's show, the versatile and popular local band Danny and the Dusters will tune up in Lawrence Hall and provide dance music late into the night (or early into the morning.)
Tickets are $100 (previous years were $150) and are on sale now. Buy them at the Dekker Centre, the website at www.dekkercentre.com or phone 306-445-7700. Ulmer adds there is an additional deal – buy eight tickets at $100 get two free.
