A historical site near Blaine Lake is keeping its season alive by selling their bread and allowing drive-in tours.

The Doukhobor Dugout House has had to close its doors for the 2020 season due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Site founder Brenda Cheveldayoff said they will be taking orders online for their famous bread for pick up on July 4 with all sales going towards their new Prayer Home project that was slated for opening this summer.

When visitors come to pick up their bread, they will be greeted by a volunteer in period costume. They will be able to drive around the site and see the buildings, but everyone will have to stay in their vehicles.

“They'll be able to see the whole yard, all the different buildings and the scenic view of the river and then on the other side as they're driving out, their bread will be waiting there for them.”

The Doukhobor bread recipe is 200 years old and does not contain any preservatives. Eight volunteers will bake the bread fresh from the clay oven. Everyone is encouraged to place their orders in advance.
