A ceremony was held Nov. 19 to recognize the graduates of North West Regional College's Battlefords Campus practical nursing program.

Family, friends, and dignitaries gathered at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford to celebrate the achievements of the 12 program graduates. These students completed a rigorous 65-week program accredited by the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (SIAST) and now must write the national licensure exams to be recognized as licensed practical nurses (LPN).

This program is strongly supported by the community and during the ceremony two scholarships were awarded to deserving students. The Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation Health Care Scholarship was awarded to Dianne Weitzel and the Sheldon and Shauna Gardiner Nursing Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Joanne Swiftwolfe.

North West Regional College delivers Practical Nurse training at both its Battlefords and Meadow Lake campuses. Over the past 10 years, 88 students have graduated from these programs providing valued professional nurses to health authorities in the Northwest, according to a press release.

The college is currently delivering a practical nursing program in Meadow Lake and 14 students will begin the program at Battlefords Campus in February 2011.

Students receive superior instruction from highly qualified College staff in the classroom and from the exceptional health professionals that provide the practical training in health care facilities around the Northwest, the release states.
