After a five-year absence, Ducks Unlimited is bringing back its Greenwing Day event, in cooperation with the Humboldt Wildlife Federation.

The event is designed to teach kids about the outdoors, whether that be learning about respect for wildlife or something as simple as casting a fishing rod.

"I'm amazed how many kids haven't done anything like that before," said Dave Atamanchuk, a conservation specialist with Ducks Unlimited. "A lot of these kids are city kids and haven't been exposed to this before."

Greenwing Day took a five-year hiatus due to increased difficulties in becoming a volunteer. There were innumerable forms to fill out and Atamanchuk said only one person had registered as a volunteer over the past five years.

"Before it was basically signing a one-page document and you could be a volunteer," Atamanchuk said.

To avoid these logistical problems, Ducks Unlimited partnered with the Humboldt Wildlife Federation and will now offer a simple one-page form for anyone looking to volunteer.

"We're getting a lot of interest so far," Atamanchuk said. "At least 10 to 12 volunteers."

The event will be held on Aug. 13 between 12:30 and 6 p.m. at the Humboldt Wildlife Federation building just south of Humboldt. It is designed for children between the ages of six and 12. A $25 registration fee will cover event activities (usually five), a barbecue and a one-year Greenwing membership.

Anyone interested in registering for the event is asked to contact Lynn Stammen at [email protected]. Potential volunteers should contact Dave Atamanchuk at [email protected].
