The REACT landfill just south of Humboldt was the site of a small fire last Thursday. The Humboldt Fire Department was notified of the fire at around 2:30 p.m. It was caused by sparks flying from a nearby wood pile into the landfill's lower pit, which contains shingles and other housing materials that aren't meant to be burned. About 15 firefighters were on hand to subdue the blaze, which took several hours to put out.At one point a Brockman's trackhoe arrived to dig material out of the pit so the firefighters could get at the base of the fire. The fire was completely contained by about 8:30 p.m. and caused no damage.
