A local artist and filmmaker from Poundmaker Cree Nation has been nominated for a Saskatchewan Arts Award.

Floyd Favel is one of three shortlisted nominees in the Artistic Excellence category. The other nominees in the category are Amalie Atkins of Saskatoon, and Kenneth T. Williams, also of Saskatoon.

According to the bio provided by Saskatchewan Arts Board, Favel is a theatre director, playwright, essayist and Cree traditionalist who has worked across Canada and the world. He developed his own unique theatre system and method called “Native Performance Culture,” described as the only contemporary Indigenous theatre method in the world which consists of theatre exercises devised from Indigenous ritual and social structures.

Favel has been involved in Saskatchewan and national organizations and taught his original methods at the University of Toronto, Concordia University and the University of Ottawa, among others. Floyd also conducts workshops and special events at his Kulture House on Poundmaker Cree Nation.

He has an independent company called Miyawata Culture, and this year has been shooting an independent feature film called Sweet Cherry Wine.

Overall, there are five categories up for grabs including Emerging Artist, Leadership - Individual, Leadership - Organization, and Arts and Learning. The Lieutenant Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Recipient will be honoured as well and that is going to Jack Sures of Regina, a renowned ceramist and art educator.

The awards will be handed out Oct. 26 at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon. For more information visit saskartsboard.ca.
