North Battleford Fire responded Thursday to a structure fire at a single detached garage on the 1000 block of 109th Street.

According to a news release from the fire department, the call came at 6:44 p.m. that evening. The initial response was one fire engine and three personnel; according to the fire department the initial arriving crew contained the fire to the affected structure, and no damage was sustained to surrounding properties. The initial crew used extreme caution to fight the fire while waiting for Sask Power to de-energize the line. At one point a power line burned off, with two firefighters narrowly escaping injury.

Additional reinforcements arrived at the scene with a total response of eight personnel. Fire crews were on the scene for approximately one hour and 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

The structure sustained major damage to the interior of the building, with moderate damage to the rafters and facia. There was also damage to the power pole and power was out in part of the surrounding area due to the main power line shorting out due to heat damage. The fire is under investigation.
