Planning continues for the Town of Hafford and the Rural Municipality of Redberry 2013 Celebration. The celebration takes place June 28, 29, 30, and July 1.

The citizens of the community were given a brief update about the preparations for that event on April 10 at a town hall meeting.

A committee was formalized in August 2011, consisting of members from the RM of Redberry and from the Town of Hafford to prepare for the centennial celebrations. Since that time, the committee has invested hundreds of hours into the preparations. One of the first projects which the committee tackled was searching for a logo. Because the committee strongly believes in the youth of Hafford Central School, it was decided to involve the students with a design contest. The committee was thoroughly amazed by the enthusiasm and interest that evolved and was demonstrated in this contest. Michael Herman and Brittany Attrux were the winners. They designed the logo that has appeared on all the centennial correspondence. The youth continue to be involved in the preparations as well. Youth Team Force has been arranging activities for children and youth. There will be fun activities for every age group.

Early in September of 2011, the committee selected the slogan for the celebration - to commemorate the past, celebrate the present and to leave a legacy for the future. Letters were sent to the various organizations, institutions and businesses of the community for support in the form of sponsorship, donations towards projects, events and activities.

Several town hall meetings were held to gather input from the various sectors of the community, and to seek volunteers for sub-committees, and for the various events of the celebration. The committee is grateful for the interest and support that was garnered.

Invitations were sent out for a homecoming and by what it appears, there will be a "full house."

The archives committee for the centennial committee has been busy over the past six months, researching history and photos for the historical publication that will be part of the registration package. A pictorial and historical calendar is also being published along with a DVD that will be for sale.

A legacy project is the highlight of the event and is being created by Jim Jensen of Jensen Foundry of Mont Nebo. The legacy project will be unveiled Saturday, June 29, as part of the celebration events. This project will stand at the north end of Main Street as part of the park that was initiated by the Communities in Bloom. The legacy project will be a landmark for years to come.

A second project was undertaken, to commemorate the provincial constituency of Redberry/Redberry Lake. The bronze plaque, inscribed with the names of all the MLAs who served the constituency, will be unveiled Sunday, June 30 at Redberry Lake.

The gigantic 100th birthday party of Hafford/RM of Redberry will begin Friday, June 28 at 7 p.m. with registration and a wine and cheese reception. Saturday, June 29, a continental breakfast will be served at the Communiplex followed by the centennial parade at 10 a.m. Saturday afternoon will focus on all school reunions as well as the health care centre reunion. Children and youth activities are being planned for both, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. At dusk, Sunday, June 30, there will be a fireworks display.

This sounds like a very exciting weekend, so let's hope the weather co-operates for a fun time at dear old Hafford!
