A small grass fire just half a kilometer north of the North Battleford Golf and Country Club’s 19th Tee kept firefighters busy for about 20 minutes Monday.

North Battleford Fire Department sent two apparatus and four firefighters to the scene at about 4:40 p.m.

NBFD reports fire crews were able to quickly contain the fire under tricky conditions involving high winds.

One person on the scene reports the fire chief surmised the blaze began with a discarded cigarette.

Battleford Fire Department also spent some time along the bank of the North Saskatchewan River just off Levee Road Monday night. A fire in the bush was kept under close monitoring to ensure it did not spread. The site of the blaze was still smouldering Tuesday morning.
