The Nipawin Hawks’ ten game winning streak came to an abrupt end with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Battlefords North Stars in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Nipawin.
The loss was the Hawks’ first since a 4-3 overtime loss to Flin Flon on Dec. 2, but extended their points streak to 19 straight games, dating back to a 2-1 loss to the Melfort Mustangs on Nov. 10.
The Hawks came out of the gates flying against the second ranked North Stars scoring three times as Josh McDougall, Austin Mikesch and Jordan Simoneau all found the back of the net to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead after the first period.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, despite scoring in the final minute of the first period they were unable to carry their momentum into the second as the North Stars scored the lone goal, sending the game into the third period with the Hawks in front 3-1.
The final frame did not go any better for the black and gold as Dakota Huebner and Brad Girard both found the back of the net to complete the North Stars’ three goal comeback sending the game into overtime tied at three.
After the extra frame solved nothing the two teams went into a shootout.
In the breakaway challenge it was the North Stars who enjoyed all of the success as both MacGregor Sinclair and Layne Young found the back of the net, while McDougall and Michael Grant were stopped giving the North Stars the 4-3 shootout win.
Special teams were even on the night for both teams as the Hawks converted on 1-of-6 chances, while the North Stars scored on 1-of-5 opportunities.
Jake Anthony was charged with the loss in the Hawks goal allowing three goals on 35 shots in regulation and overtime, and zero of two shots in the shootout as the Hawks were outshot 35-27.
Simoneau was the Hawks' only star of the game.
The Hawks will look to get back to their winning ways on Jan. 12 when they put their 19 game point streak on the line in the front half of a home-and-home series with the Melville Millionaires in Melville.
