Hawks get balanced offensive attack in win over Hounds
The Nipawin Hawks keep rolling right along as they cruised past the Notre Dame Hounds 5-0 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Nipawin on Jan. 19.
The win extended the Hawks’ point streak to 22 games.
The game got off to an excellent start for the black and gold as they came out flying, outshooting the Hounds 15-8 in the opening period, and getting goals from Logan Casavant and Austin Mikesch.
The second period was more of the same for the Hawks as they fired 17 shots on the Hounds goal, and managed the period’s only goal off the stick of Brett Harasymuk.
Despite holding a comfortable lead the Hawks refused to let their foot off the gas as Daven Smith scored his third of the year just 2:42 into the final period and Kenzie Arnold added his sixth to give the Hawks the win.
Special teams were excellent for the Hawks as they finished the evening 2-for-5 with the man advantage, and a perfect 3-for-3 while killing penalties.
Declan Hobbs earned the shutout in the Hawks goal turning aside all 27 shots he faced for his second shutout and 13th win of the season.
Hawks ride late period goals to win
Late period goals served as the catalyst for the Nipawin Hawks in their 5-0 win over the Yorkton Terriers in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Yorkton.
The Jan. 20 contest saw the Hawks score in the final 3:30 of each period, including once with one second to play, and once with three seconds to play.
The game’s first goal was the latest of the late period goals, as Tyler Adams scored his second goal since joining the Hawks with just a second to play, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead after one period.
Logan Casavant then extended the Hawks’ lead to two goals with his second goal in as many games.
And before the period was out Josh McDougall scored his 12th goal of the year giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead with just three seconds left in period two.
The Hawks continued their onslaught in the third as Kenzie Arnold and Chad McCartney both found the back of the net, giving the Hawks the win, and extending their points streak to 23 games in the process.
Declan Hobbs picked up his second shutout in as many starts, turning aside all 21 shots he faced for his 14th win of the season.
The Hawks outshot the Terriers 44-21.
The black and gold will now enjoy a couple days off before returning to action on Jan. 26 for a showdown with the second place Battlefords North Stars in North Battleford.
