Photos can be a great way to capture memories or things in life that are important, and Humboldt Collegiate Institute’s (HCI) Photo 30 class brought that to life with their exhibit ‘My Life’.
The exhibit’s opening reception was held at the Humboldt Gallery on June 12.
The show, which features work from HCI’s three Photo 30 students; Adam Eichorst, Cara Welder, and Amy Plaquin, is entitled ‘My Life’, which HCI photography teacher Dawn Goosen says is a great theme because it allows diversity, and encapsulates their life.
“You’re going to see nature, you’re going to see animals, you’re going to see sports, you’re going to see their families.”
The exhibit is a culmination of their high school photography careers, with Photo 10 focusing on the basics of a camera and shooting in manual, and Photo 20 learning more about the camera and working with Photoshop.
Photo 30 puts those skills together, and works on seeing students develop a business model.
“One of the outcomes is for them to put on a show… and I think it’s also a nice way to say farewell to their time at HCI,” says Goosen.
Being able to bring their work to the gallery is nice, says Goosen, who notes the gallery has been a big supporter of HCI photography.
“The opportunity for kids to see their art and their pictures in a community space and have them celebrated with a night like this is quite phenomenal.”
Gallery Cultural Programmer, Katelyn Roughley, says the opportunity to work with the high school is a great way for students to not only get their work out there, but feel more comfortable in doing so.
The gallery is open Tuesday – Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., with the community able to visit the exhibit free of charge until June 30.
