When you need to raise funds to purchase a new mammography unit what do you do? Well, the medical imaging department at Battlefords Union Hospital decided to host a “Hootenanny for Hooters!”

It was a delightful evening with outstanding songs and music from the ‘60s era, provided by Meota Musical Productions, which included family and friends who travelled to join them.

Claudette McGuire, executive director of the BUH Foundation, said, “The medical imaging staff are an excellent group to work with when we are fundraising for a piece of medical equipment for their department. We are raising over $500,000 to purchase a new mammography unit and the funds raised from this event certainly will assist us in reaching our goal. They planned this event, held in November 2018, for 300-plus attendees, baked and created specialized desserts, decorated the hall and tables, sewed aprons for the volunteers and generally produced an exceptional evening … all through volunteer hours. We are honoured to work with this group of caring professionals and grateful to everyone who attended and helped that night and for the fundraising that was accomplished.”

Transition Lead - Medical Imaging Services - Provincial Programs, Cheryl Mitchell, added, “a mammogram is considered the ‘gold standard’ in the detection of early breast cancer, when it is most treatable, and the current unit is over 10 years old and needs to be replaced. Medical equipment in this area always has a high price tag and we wanted to help BUH Foundation raise funds for the new mammography unit. The evening was a great success and I must add that the entertainment was a very large part of this success. The performers from Meota were fun, outstanding and most enjoyable.”
