Humboldt Habitat project needs more volunteers

The Habitat for Humanity Project in Humboldt got financial and volunteer boosts last week thanks to local companies, but are expecting to need more volunteers in the upcoming weeks. The duplex is beginning to look very much like two homes.

The duplex is beginning to look very much like two homes. The kitchen cupboards are in, as are some of the bathroom fixtures. Drywall is up throughout the house and some painting has been done. Doors have been installed on rooms and on closets, and outside, the water connections are finished.
Site manager Tim Prytula is expecting a mid-January completion on the duplex, allowing the families to move in at that point.
"It didn't quite happen for Christmas," he told the Journal with some regret in his voice, but the project has moved ahead by leaps and bounds in the past few weeks.
The floors have been installed in both sides of the duplex, and all the mouldings and baseboards were expected to be installed very soon.
The project is really down to the finish work at this point, Prytula agreed, apart from some work that still has to be done by the trades, including some plumbing and electrical installations.
There is plenty of painting to be done, and a dropped ceiling to install in both basements, reported Bob Bellamy, co-chair of the Humboldt Habitat for Humanity committee.
The remaining plumbing work could be done by the end of this week, he noted, which will allow them to get both furnaces running. Right now, the furnace in one side of the duplex is running; the other is being heated by electric heaters.
Coming up on Christmas, individual volunteers are definitely needed.
"We could always use more volunteers," said Bellamy. "Sometimes we have just two in a day. We're getting closer to the end, and we'd like lots of volunteers when we're painting the basements."
They are working on the house from Tuesday to Saturday every week leading up to Christmas, and volunteers can come for the whole day or even just part of one.
Those interested in volunteering can contact Connie Danyluik, the volunteer coordinator for the project.
