HUMBOLDT — Dog owners and lovers will fill the park for an afternoon with the return of the Humboldt and District SPCA’s event “Dog Day in the Park”.

Dog Day in the Park will have live music, vendors, kids' games with prizes, crafts and dog competitions.

Wanda Price, manager and animal care director with the SPCA, said the competitions that they’ll be having are less competitive, and more for fun.

“Everybody has to keep their dogs on leash so you can’t really do too much. We do best trick, best outfit – they come all dressed up, some do – the most handsome dog, the most beautiful dog, the largest, the oldest, the smallest. All sorts of little things.”

The event takes place Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Water Ridge Park.

“It’s a bit of a fundraiser for us,” Price said. “It’s good for everybody that has dogs in town to get them out and socialize – makes for a safer town, safer dogs.”

Price said socializing is important for dogs because it familiarizes them with other dogs.

“If they get loose, they won’t go fighting with other dogs,” she said. “It’s good for them to be social and out with other dogs and people.”

“That’s what you’re supposed to do with every puppy. You’re supposed to socialize it with everything you can think of – people, different areas, different things, garbage cans – all sorts of stuff.”

There be an adoption center set up at the event so attendees can meet some of the SPCA’s little friends that are up for adoption.

“Whatever puppies we have, whatever dogs can handle that many dogs and people. We might bring a few kittens if the weather looks nice, we don’t want them to get cold.”

The Humboldt SPCA hopes to fundraise about $2,000 from this event, with funds being made from the barbeque, games and entries into the dog competitions.

“It all depends on what the weather is like.”
