The shoreline assessment and remediation of the North Saskatchewan River has resumed.

The announcement was made this week that cleanup has resumed of oil that is left over from the Husky oil spill that happened last July.

Activity resumed Monday with boats and Husky Oil trucks seen around the river area. At council Monday night, city manager Jim Puffalt provided some details on what was going on.

He said North Battleford will be a base of operations for Husky as they proceed with this shoreline remediation. They are leasing the Don Ross Arena as a location, and expect to be doing this work over the next four or five months, until about September or October. The boat launch will also be employed.

Some 40-50 employees will be employed to do the shoreline evaluation work.

Also, dogs that are trained to sniff out oil products will be employed in that work. “They will be going up and down the shoreline trying to find deposits,” said Puffalt.

That prompted an amused Mayor Ryan Bater to ask “are the dogs Huskies?”, which drew some chuckles.
