Schools and the Glaslyn Recreation Board are joining forces to promote an anti-bullying message while raising funds needed to repair the Glaslyn skating rink.

As with many small communities, the skating rink is a vital aspect of the community's recreation infrastructure, according to those involved in the project. To date $90,000 has been raised towards an ultimate objective of $150,000.

Organizers say the needed repairs must be completed before hockey season starts this fall. The rink is home to hockey from pre-novice to senior and recreational as well as public skating, CanSkate lessons and school physical education programs.

In it's most recent fundraising effort, the recreation board is partnering with Glaslyn and Medstead Central Schools and Edam's H. Hardcastle School to host aboriginal motivational speaker and country music singer Donny Parenteau of Prince Albert Friday, April 11.

Parenteau will present his anti-bulling program, It Starts With a Dream, at the three schools during the day.

His presentation encourages youth to pursue and achieve their highest ambitions, regardless of their personal obstacles.

Students in Glaslyn Central School will be creating works of art that will be judged and the three winners will get to sit with Parenteau during the supper that is part of the evening program beginning at 5 p.m. at Glaslyn Community Hall.

Parenteau will perform two sets during the evening, which will also feature a live dessert auction, presentations and a performance by Casey Davies and Rick Peden, local singer/songwriters.

A multi-talented musician, Parenteau, has been the highest nominated performer twice with the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards. He has also earned three JUNO nominations.

His humanitarian and charity work has earned him the 2012 SCMA Achievement Award.
