Lack of RM contributions has Melfort airport apron project short of funds

Gas tax contributions to be used for shortfall
Melfort City Hall

Work on replacing the Melfort airport apron is short of funding but there is still hope through the provincial government’s Community Airport Partnership (CAP) program, Melfort council was told.

Council held its meeting on May 4.

According to documentation from the April 17 Works and Utilities committee meeting, a call out was made to surrounding RMs and communities impacted by the health of the Melfort airport. According to the budget for the apron, council anticipated $279,545 of the total cost of the project to come from municipal contributions.

After a review of the municipalities that are contributing, the total came to just over $80,000 going towards the project from two rural municipalities and one town. Because of this, council has approved $199,069 of the 2020 gas tax contributions to go towards the project to make up for the shortfall in municipal contributions.

Council is still waiting for confirmation from the CAP program before being able to move forward with the project but according to City Treasurer Sandy Peterson, the project must be able to move forward once CAP funding has been approved.
