Though municipal councils around the province are just settling in to get some work started after elections were held this fall, LeRoy is now looking for a new mayor. Morris Hartman was re-elected as mayor of LeRoy by acclamation when nominations closed on September 19 of this year. He joined six councillors on LeRoy's town council who were all also elected by acclamation - Ray Sussums, Ben Dyck, Denis McKnight, Brian Thoen, Ken Crowter and Dustin Hartman. However, Hartman then tendered his resignation as mayor effective October 31, prompting the town to start the procedures to open up nominations for the position again. Nominations open on November 16 and close on December 5. Hartman had been mayor of LeRoy for eight years this time around. He told the Journal he started out as a councillor for the town of LeRoy, a position he held for seven years. Then he ran for mayor and won, and served for eight years. A position with the Central Plains Health District took Hartman off municipal council for 10 years, he explained, but once that term was up, he came back on as mayor. That brings his total years of service to LeRoy on town council to 23, including his years as a councillor.Hartman has stepped down at this time, he said, for both personal and business reasons. Hartman doesn't regret the time he spent serving his community. "I enjoyed the people and I enjoyed doing what I was doing," he told the Journal. "With BHP (Billiton building a mine at Jansen lake, near LeRoy), there's a lot happening."For those thinking of throwing their name in, and taking over as mayor of LeRoy, Hartman said they will be getting involved at an exciting time, when the community is going to be growing."It will be very interesting," he promised.
