The Reid-Thompson Public Library kicked off their TD Summer Reading Club with a fun night of games and stories on Jun. 28.
The program invites kids ages 3-12 to keep track of books they read over the summer and join in in fun activities at the summer book club lead by summer intern, Matthew Sokolan.
Thirty-eight children signed up for the club but there are always more that sign up throughout the summer, says Librarian Rose Ward.
With the kids out of school for the summer, the reading club encourages kids to keep on reading during the summer months for fun.
The theme for the summer is “wild” so Ward says that the Reid-Thompson Public Library is going to be “wild about books” for the summer.
The staff dressed up as their favourite wild book characters for the event with Ward as Camilla from A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.
Ward has always liked the book and says there is a good moral at the end of it for children and adults.
“It teaches us not to worry about what other people think of us but to go forth and be ourselves.”
Norine Mann dressed up at Tedd Arnold’s Fly Guy, Elaine Carthy was The Cat in the Hat from the Dr. Suess classic, Crystal Gudmundson was Mary Poppins from P. L. Travers’ books, and Sokolan dressed up as a wild thing from Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.
They also had a surprise guest for the evening with Dawn Hassman reading to the children and adults as Tilly who just got back from a trip to Bookville via Author Airlines.
Ward is really excited to try to beat last years numbers of 109 children and 1780 books read in July and August.
The TD Summer Reading Club is the biggest bilingual reading program in the country with over 2,000 public libraries taking part.
