A virtual event will be held Saturday, Nov. 21, to recognize individuals who have made contributions to the multicultural community and one of those is from Poundmaker Cree Nation.
Floyd Favel, who is described an “essayist, journalist, theatre director, cultural activist and Cree traditionalist” in the province’s news release, is one of three individuals up for a Saskatchewan Multicultural Leadership Award. The other nominees are Chetan Amble, teacher, Grenfell Community High School, Grenfell, and Nelson Eng, Chinese Freemasons, Regina.
Also presented will be the Multicultural Youth Leadership Award to an individual 29 years of age and under who has made promising contributions to the multicultural community. The 2020 nominees are Chilombo Mwela, a University of Regina student, and Vibya Natana, who is Community Development and Sponsorship Director, South-Sudanese Youth of Canada (SSYC).
The awards will be presented by His Honour the Honourable Russ Mirasty, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, along with other speakers including the Honourable Laura Ross (Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport) Meka Okochi, MCoS President, Leanna Bill, SGEU, and Colleen Charles, MCoS Board of Directors.
The event leads off Saskatchewan Multicultural Week running Nov. 21-29. The province is also running the ‘Who’s Your Multicultural Superhero?’ campaign throughout November.
