Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry Scholarships were awarded to 100 high school graduates from 66 communities around Saskatchewan this year.

Northwest students earned eight of the scholarships. They are North Battleford Composite High School students Alicia Piller and Jesse McNabb, Shaun Doom of Meota who attends North Battleford's John Paul II Collegiate, Turtleford School's Jordan Rhode, Unity Composite High School's Tyson Senger, Spiritwood High School's Nicolas Anderson, Macklin School's Hayden Soderlund and Edam's H. Hardcastle School student Jayden Manastyrski.

The scholarship launched in 2009-10 and is administered by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Trade Certification Commission with most funding provided by industry partners and the Government of Saskatchewan.

It is open to students who participated in the SYA Program, which seeks to encourage students to explore opportunities in skilled trades. High schools participating in SYA are asked to nominate at least one "outstanding graduating student" for the scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship can be redeemed only within two years of graduation after the recipient has demonstrated to be actively pursuing a trade career by apprenticing and completing technical training or completing a pre-employment program. This year saw almost 3,300 students participating in the SYA Program with 620 of those students graduating and completing the program.
