A local MLA has passed away suddenly.

Kevin Phillips, who served the citizens of the Melfort constituency, passed away Nov. 13. He was 63.

“All of Kevin’s friends and colleagues are shocked and saddened by his sudden and unexpected passing,” said Premier Brad Wall in a media release. “Kevin was back in Regina yesterday, getting ready for another week of doing what he loved to do – representing the people of Melfort in the Assembly – so his passing was completely without warning.

Phillips was first elected to the Legislature in 2011 and re-elected in 2016.  Prior to becoming an MLA, Phillips was Melfort’s mayor.

The government noted Phillips’ efforts to secure a new domestic violence shelter for Melfort. The North East Outreach and Support Services’ shelter was the first since 1989.

Phillips is survived by his wife April, four children and several grandchildren.

Flags at the Saskatchewan Legislature have been lowered to half staff in honour of Phillips.

Update: The City of Melfort has set up a memorial book at City Hall for people who wish to leave a message or tribute for his family.
