A Loon Lake man charged with making and possessing child pornography and luring a child was remanded in custody.

Steven Joseph Lasas, 26, appeared via CCTV in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 8 for a continuation of a show cause hearing on March 25 to determine if he will be granted bail. A show cause hearing is typical when the judge needs more information before making a decision.

Lasas was arrested on Jan. 22, 2020, after Saskatoon Police and Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit (Sask ICE) searched his home. Police had launched an investigation after a grandmother contacted them saying she believed her young grandson was being sexually lured through a popular social media application. Sask ICE – which investigates crimes involving the abuse or exploitation of children on the Internet – identified Lasas as the suspect and located where he was living temporarily in Saskatoon.

Lasas is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 15 for another show cause hearing.

The charges haven’t been proven in court.

Anyone with information of a child being exploited through the use of the internet are encouraged to contact their local police department or the nearest RCMP detachment. Tips can also be left through Crimestoppers, Cybertip.ca or by calling 639-625-4247.
