EAST CENTRAL — Two candidates, Linda Mattock and Heather Zazula, are running for trustee for the Horizon School Division’s Humboldt-St. Brieux seat, Subdivision 2.
Horizon School Division school board elections will be held on Nov. 9.
Subdivision 2 includes Humboldt, Annaheim, St. Brieux, Middle Lake and Lake Lenore schools, meaning residents will have a chance to vote for their division representative during their municipal elections on Nov. 9.

Mattock, the incumbent, was first elected during the 2016 election.
Education has been Mattock’s passion for the last 35 years, she said, first a teacher, a vice-principal, a principal and then a superintendent of education. That passion is still alive, she said, and she is not going to stop now.
“That passion to make a difference in education in the lives of children and youth across our school division is still a burning desire.”
Mattock thoroughly believes in the strategic plan laid out by the Horizon School Division and she wants to see the goals like increased literacy and graduation rates come to fruition.
“We have focused really strongly on improving literacy and numeracy successes for our students. And I certainly want to see that continue.”
One recent addition to the school division is a committee that focuses on working with school community councils in the division. As a key link to student success, Mattock wants to see this committee develop further to strengthen the links parents have with their community councils.

Zazula said this is the logical next step for her since she has already worked as an Educational Assistant, volunteered with her local school community council and worked as an office manager for the Ministry of Education.
Her work with her school community council has meant that she has made valuable connections with parents.
As coach of her daughter’s club volleyball team, Zazula has seen the value of sports in student’s lives, she said, so getting sports safely back into schools is something that she will be focusing on if elected as a trustee, as well as listening to and representing students and parents.
“They just need sports, so I’ll try my best to help make the sports program come back and be normal as much as we can be normal.”
Zazula will be using social media and posters to let people know what she stands for and what she wants to do to make things better for students.
