Treyton Pernitsky, son of Sheldon and Syndee Pernitsky of Wilkie, has earned a leadership award from Huskies Athletics at the University of Saskatchewan.
Pernitsky is in his second year at the University of Saskatchewan enrolled at the Edwards School of Business. He is a track and field team distance runner and specializes in middle-distance events. He was named as captain of the team.
Because there was no athletic awards due to the lack of competition season due to the pandemic, leadership awards were created. An award was given to an athlete on each of the teams for their leadership shown during the pandemic. Recipients were chosen by athletes on the teams by nomination.
“As a second-year runner from Wilkie, Treyton Pernitsky has been the ultimate team player for the 2020-2021 season,” states Huskies Athletics. “This business student has made valiant efforts to stay in touch with his team and continues to motivate people to strive to achieve their goals academically, and athletically, during this difficult season.”
While accepting the award, Pernitsky spreads the recognition around.
“I am proud of the family our team has become and each team member is a leader in their own way.”
He encourages everyone to stay safe, keep wearing their masks and get vaccinated when they are eligible so everyone can return to sport in the future.
The award was presented by Chief Athletics Officer Dave Hardy, who describes the tribute as a way to bring the student-athlete body together to celebrate accomplishments throughout the year.
“It provides an opportunity for us to recognize and highlight the individual success and milestones of some of the most outstanding performances of the season. As we reflect on the 2020-21 season, although those performances did not happen, we want to acknowledge the dedication our athletes displayed to the University of Saskatchewan, Huskie athletics and the community,” Hardy said.
“This year, our awards have been based on leadership. You have been recognized by your coach and teammates for outstanding contributions to your education, community and team.”
