A Meadow Lake man has pleaded not guilty to 13 firearms-related charges and a trial is set.

Lennex Merasty-Morin, 31, appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court April 20 and April 21 for a show cause hearing. He was granted bail and released April 21.

The charges are a result of an incident when two men were allegedly shot while driving near the intersection of 7th Avenue and 5th Street West in Meadow Lake on Nov. 23, 2019. According to RCMP, the 32-year-old driver of the vehicle had a gunshot wound to his back and the 50-year-old passenger was also injured. Police didn’t specify the injuries to the 50-year-old.

Meadow Lake RCMP say they went the hospital to get information from the two victims who said the suspects were in a white four-door car. Shortly after, police saw the suspected vehicle leave Meadow Lake on a rural road. They tried to stop the white four-door Chevrolet but the driver sped away and a police chase ensued until the driver lost control and crashed the car into a bush on Range Road 610.

Four people were arrested, including Richard Angus, 38, Corey Bouvier, 30, Joshua Matheson, 26, and Charley Seright, 25. They were charged with flight from police and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

No weapons were found in the vehicle. RCMP issued a warrant for the arrest of Merasty-Morin. He was located and arrested the following month after a foot chase. Police say a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) was used on Merasty-Morin during the arrest.

The charges haven’t been proven in court.

Merasty-Morin’s trial is scheduled to begin in Meadow Lake Provincial Court Aug. 11, 2020.
