A crash between a truck and a car during the long weekend killed one person in the car and injured another. The driver of the truck is charged with impaired driving causing death.
The truck, driven by 46-year-old Troy Tolofson of the Melfort area, was traveling east on Highway #789 on Sept. 2 when it crashed into a car travelling south on the Kinistino grid.
When Melfort RCMP arrived on the scene at 6:18 p.m. Sept. 2, the driver of the car, 46-year-old Quinn Shermeta of the Melfort area, was pronounced deceased. Shermeta's passenger, a 36-year-old woman, was transported to hospital in Saskatoon by STARS with unknown injuries.
The lone driver of the truck allegedly fled on foot and was arrested a short distance from the collision scene. He was transported to hospital in Melfort with injuries.
As a result of the Melfort RCMP’s investigation, Tolofson is charged with one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, two counts of failure to remain and one count of resisting arrest.
Tolofson made his first appearance in Melfort Provincial Court Sept. 5 at 10:00 a.m. His next court appearance will be on Sept. 12 at 9:30 a.m. in Melfort Provincial Court.
