A slow start sunk the Melfort Mustangs as they fell 3-2 to the Yorkton Terriers in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Yorkton on Nov. 22.

The game got off to a terrible start for the Mustangs as they found themselves behind 1-0 just 3:24 into the first period.

Rock Ruschkowski scored his fourth of the year at 17:47 to tie the score at one, but the Mustangs could not keep the game tied as the Terriers responded less than a minute later to take the game into the first intermission with the Terriers ahead 2-1.

Things did not go any better for the Mustangs in the second as Chantz Petruic scored his third goal of the game to give the Terriers a 3-1 lead.

The game remained 3-1 until the dying minutes of the third when Colin Schmidt scored his seventh of the year to cut the Mustangs’ deficit to one.

Unfortunately for the visitors, that was as close as they would come as they fell 3-2, snapping a streak of six straight games with at least a point.

Evan Plotnik was charged with the loss in the Mustangs cage allowing, three goals on 19 shots as the Mustangs outshot the Terriers 31-21.

Plotnik was briefly pulled from the contest in favour of Hunter Arps, who played the last 8:43 of period two turning aside both shots he faced, before Plotnik returned to the net for the third.

The Mustangs now enjoy a couple of days off before returning to action Nov. 25 when they host the Estevan Bruins.
