Mustangs score four in third to beat Ice Wolves

A dominating third period served as the difference for the Melfort Mustangs who picked up a 6-2 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from La Ronge.

The Mustangs scored four times in the third period of their Jan. 12 contest, turning a 2-2 tie into the 6-2 win.

The game got off to an ugly start for the Mustangs as Zach Bannister and Shane Hounsell both found the back of the net to give the Ice Wolves a 2-0 lead just 9:06 into the game.

The visitors wasted little time cutting into the lead however, as Andrew Thompson scored his 13th goal of the season just 23 seconds later to cut the Mustangs’ deficit to one.

Before the period came to an end, Drew Warkentine scored his fifth goal of the year, sending the game into the first intermission tied at two.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the second period, setting up the Mustangs’ third period heroics.

Loch Morrison got the party started for the Mustangs in the third scoring his 13th goal of the year, snapping a streak of eight straight games without a goal.

Just 22 seconds after Morrison made it 3-2, Justin Ball made it 4-2, scoring his 15th goal of the season.

Adam Hergott picked up his fifth of the year, and Nolan Kadachuk his third of the year, to round out the scoring for the Mustangs, who finished with four goals in a span of 8:53 in the final period.

Hunter Arps picked up the win in the Mustangs goal, turning aside 31 of the 33 shots he faced as the Mustangs outshot the Ice Wolves 49-33.

 

Mustangs score early and often in rout of Ice Wolves

The Melfort Mustangs jumped out of the gate flying and carried their strong start to a 6-1 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Melfort.

One night after scoring four times in the final period to beat the Ice Wolves, the Mustangs piled up three in the first period to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

Colin Schmidt and Zach Anderson scored 29 seconds apart to give the Mustangs an early 2-0 lead, and Eric McNeilly added his second of the year to give the Mustangs the 3-0 lead.

The Mustangs continued their onslaught over the next period and a half as Drew Warkentine scored his sixth of the year in the second period, Rock Ruschkowski his ninth of the year and Loch Morrison his 14th of the year in the third to give the Mustangs a commanding 6-0 lead.

Zach Bannister responded for the Ice Wolves cutting the Mustangs’ lead to 6-1, and snapping Evan Plotnik’s shutout bid in the process.

The Mustangs would shut the game down over the final eight plus minutes, as they skated away with the win.

Plotnik was solid in the Mustangs goal allowing just one goal on 32 shots as the Mustangs outshot the Ice Wolves 39-32.

The Mustangs have now won seven straight and will put their winning streak on the line when they take on the Melville Millionaires on Jan. 19 in Melville.
